Navio on why international artists sign local musicians

According to artist Navio, foreign labels that sign Ugandan performers don’t do so out of love.

Most of them, he claims, are there to see the musicians who are targeting their market. They sign them, but nothing happens when they put pen to paper.

He clarified that their goal is to suspend the Ugandan musician while they continue to pursue their own goals of greatness. This is the reason why a lot of musicians who sign with foreign labels don’t succeed in Uganda.

“Most of those labels sign musicians they are afraid of. They see them coming for their market, and what they do is sign you and put you on hold as they push their artist. After two, three, or five years, they don’t renew the contract, and you would be nowhere on the scene,” he partly explained in an interview with a local television.

According to Navio, this is also the reason why Keko and Irene Ntale signed with Sony and Universal Music but were never successful.
